Buchan Seniors Men’s Handicaps for Season 2021

In 2021 Buchan Seniors members will continue to have a “Buchan Seniors’ Handicap”, separate from that used in their club golf. This is because the Association cannot use the terms “World Handicap Index” or “Slope Rating” as they are the Intellectual Property of the world governing bodies and the Association cannot use those terms without paying annual license and training fees of around £2000 a year.

In BSGA Competitions, “HandicapMaster.org” software will continue to be used to manage scores and calculate handicaps within BSGA competitions.

EACH OF THE MEN’S BUCHAN SENIORS MEMBERS WILL COMMENCE THE SEASON WITH THEIR HANDICAP BASED ON THEIR “INDEX” AT 1 MAY 2021, WITHOUT ANY OTHER ADDITIONS OR SUBTRACTIONS. HANDICAPS WITHIN BSGA COMPETITIONS WILL BE ADJUSTED ACCORDING TO PERFORMANCE USING TRADITIONAL “CONGU” CALCULATIONS AND WILL BE PUBLISHED ON THIS WEBSITE AFTER EACH COMPETITION.

“BUCHAN SENIORS HANDICAPS – AN EXPLANATION”

National and Buchan Seniors Handicaps

The Buchan Seniors Golf Association(BSGA) is NOT a “Golf Club” but is an “Association” of nine clubs in the North East of Scotland. As such, BSGA can adopt its own “Local Rules”.

BSGA’s Local Rule about dealing with a Lost Ball is a Local Rule – designed and adopted to help keep play moving on a day when up to 200 players may be on the course – which does NOT comply with the “Rules of Golf” as used globally.

Because of that, BSGA scores CANNOT be entered into the National Handicapping system and therefore do not affect a BSGA player’s National Handicap.

Player enrolment in BSGA takes place at 1 April for each Summer season. Club Representatives report to BSGA officials each of their 27 enrolled players’ exact National Handicaps as they stand at 1 April.

This becomes each player’s “Buchan Seniors’ Handicap”, for use in BSGA competition from the start of that BSGA Season.

The date of 1 April is the normal Summer Season start for golf clubs in the North-East. It is the date when club members revert to the National Handicap which they had at the end of the previous Summer.

Within the BSGA calendar of 10 Competitions, each player’s handicap may be altered according to their scores. BSGA officials use laptop software which applies the same formula as in “Club Systems” which is used in almost all golf clubs in Scotland.

BSGA scores and changes in “Buchan Seniors Handicaps” are NOT fed back into “Club Systems” and therefore do not impact on players’ National Handicaps during the season.

Early in the BSGA season, many players may find that there is a difference between their “National” and “Buchan Seniors“ handicaps. This is normal.

At each BSGA season’s start, that diffference is eliminated as every BSGA player’s handicap in the first competition of the BSGA Season – on the first Thursday in May – is their National Handicap at 1 April in that year.
